Hear the Beep Where you Sleep!

HAMILTON, ON – October 2, 2015 – Fire Prevention Week is October 4 to 10, 2015. The Hamilton Fire Department is encouraging everyone to hear the beep where you sleep and install a working smoke alarm in every bedroom.

“Many fatal fires occur at night when everyone is asleep, so early warning is crucial to survival,” says Fire Chief Rob Simonds. “The Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added protection, our fire department is recommending that you also install a smoke alarm in every bedroom.”

Smoke alarms are required to be replaced within the time frame indicated by the manufacturer. This is usually ten years. When replacing interconnected smoke alarms, it is advisable to replace all units in the system at the same time. If a single malfunctioning alarm needs to be replaced, make sure the new alarm is compatible with the existing units.

The Hamilton Fire Department will be holding a number of events throughout the week to raise public awareness about Fire Prevention Week and the importance of smoke alarms.  Our Department through the utilization of our new state of the art Fire Safety Trailer will be delivering this theme in the form of a Fire Safety Caravan where selected elementary schools throughout the City Of Hamilton will be visited and children will be taught not only the importance of working smoke alarms but also general home fire safety which includes preparing, implementing and practicing a home fire escape plan. To further enforce this valuable lesson, the children at the schools will participate in a simulated emergency within the Fire Safety Trailer and practice their home fire escape plan. On Saturday October 3, 2015, Hamilton firefighters will be at three (3) area Home Depot Stores to give out fire safety handouts and booklets on fall and winter fire safety hazards, as well as red plastic fire hats for kids. All materials for the event have been supplied by the Home Depot in partnership with the Fire Marshals Public Safety Council and the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs.

The Hamilton Fire Department will conclude Fire Prevention Week with our annual open house at all stations on Monday, October 12, 2015. The open house will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Citizens will have an opportunity to speak to fire-fighters about fire safety. Please bring a non-perishable food donation for our community food banks.
