Maple Leaf Coming to Glanbrook… Update

Maple Leaf Foods is investing $395 million into the Glanbrook (Red Hill) Industrial Park by way of a 402,000 sq. ft. new modern plant that will produce wieners and deli meats for the national markets. Over 750 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the new plant and 670 permanent jobs will be created upon completion.

This issue came to Hamilton City Council for the first time on Wednesday, Oct 19, 2011 and until then neither Council or the Mayor were aware of this proposal. As Councillor’s we were given a lot of information and little time to digest it. As you local Councillor, I felt I should have been given more information and more time to digest that information before making any decisions especially since it will be in my ward. For that reason, I voted against it. Shortly after the meeting, I have had the opportunity to ask the pertinent questions and the time to obtain the answers and I can now support this facility.
Maple Leaf will be hosting a “Community Open House” on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at their Canada Bread location on Nebo Rd, just south of Twenty Rd on the east side. Maple Leaf is hoping that many residents will take the time to drop by so they can meet and talk first hand with you in order to respond to your questions and concerns.
Maple Leaf has advised that this new facility will employ the highest standard of environmental management and like Canada Bread’s new bakery, will be one of only a handful of Canadian manufacturing facilities built to be LEED Silver certified. The new facility also represents the clean manufacturing sector and will be in the Red Hill Business Park, on close to 50 acres located near the corner of Glover Road and Twenty Road.

There will be no live animals at this plant, it will be only cold meat delivered to this plant for preparation and Maple Leaf has advised that they have no intentions of bringing a kill floor to this location. Trucks will be using Rymal Road to access Nebo Road and Twenty Road as their route until the Dartnell extension has been completed.
